Translation usually improves the source text,
the way careful re-writing would

Anomalies and inconsistencies become apparent. and
a good translator, I think, sets out to improve the original
and to produce a target text that is at least as good if not better.

Of course there is no point in translating if you don't have
a passion for written language and love words and word play.
You have to be immersed in it, reading and writing becomes
a bit like breathing.

Eventually you reach a point where every time you see some
French written anywhere you automatically start to wonder
how you would go about translating it.

I have often said that the most important bit about translation is being able to spot difficulties.
